ASA caught 900 weight-loss ad violations in one sweep
What happened
The ASA's enforcement report on weight-loss prescription-only medicines, published April 2026, reveals the scale of the problem. Active Ad Monitoring analysed 95,000+ paid online ads from 44 advertisers. Nearly 900 ads from 38 advertisers breached POM advertising rules.
Compliance has improved — from 93% in February 2025 to 99% by January 2026 after two enforcement notices. But one non-respondent was referred to the GPhC for regulatory action, showing the consequences of ignoring ASA rulings.
Who this affects
- Online pharmacies and weight-loss clinics running Google Ads, Meta ads, or paid promotions for GLP-1 medicines
- Marketing agencies managing healthcare advertising accounts
- Any clinic advertising weight-loss treatments — especially if mentioning Mounjaro, Wegovy, or other POMs
What it means
The ASA is not just reacting to complaints — it is actively monitoring ads at scale using AI. If your clinic or pharmacy runs paid ads for weight-loss treatments, there is a realistic chance the ASA is already tracking them. The 99% compliance rate shows most advertisers fall in line after enforcement, but the 1% who don't face regulatory referral.
What to watch next
The ASA has signalled continued monitoring. Expect further sweeps and potentially higher penalties for repeat offenders. The GPhC referral pathway is now tested and operational.
